박현웅 작가의 작품은 일반 캔버스에 그리는 페인팅 기법에서 벗어나, 목재를 오려서 짜 맞춘 독특한 구조 위에 구현되어 있다. 이미지에 맞게 목재가 오려져 조립되는데, 작품에 따라서 8겹까지도 올라간다. 복잡한 외곽선이 있는 세부 작업은 실톱으로 제작된다. 그리기보다는 만드는 작업에 방점이 찍혀진다. 자작나무를 자르고 오려 붙인 다음 색을 칠한다. 그 위에 다시 조각을 하여 색다른 질감을 주기도 한다. 붙이고 짜 맞추는 과정을 통해, 이미지의 층위는 점차 두터워지며, 화면 위에는 조명에 따라 회화에서는 볼 수 없는 그림자가 드리워진다. 평면 위에 입체를 표현하거나, 오브제를 붙이는 것이 아니라, 평면들이 중첩되어 이미지가 합성된다. 그림처럼 한 평면에서 이어지는 것이 아니라, 각기 독립된 판들이 쌓여지는 구조는 단편들이 연결되는 기억의 메커니즘과 비슷한 방식이다.
Park Hyun Woong's work is embodied on a unique structure in which wood is cut and then the pieces are put together, breaking away from the usual painting technique of drawing on a regular canvas. Wood is cut into pieces to be assembled according to the relevant image, and some of his works even have 8 layers of wood. Details with intricate outlines are made with a fretsaw. The emphasis is placed on 'making' rather than 'drawing'. After the birch wood is cut into pieces, the pieces are put together and then colored. It is also sculpted on top of it to give it a different texture. Through the process of pasting and piecing together the wood, the layers of the image are gradually thickened, and shadows that cannot be seen in paintings are cast on the surface depending on the lighting. Rather than expressing a three-dimensional object or attaching an object on a plane, the images are synthesized by overlapping the planes. The structure in which separate plates are stacked rather than connected in one plane like a painting is similar to the mechanism of memory in which fragments are connected to each other.
