Jun Myung Ja’s half-century of painting career can be divided into early and late periods, which shows a ‘dichotomy’ of the style centered on representation in the early period and the style centered on non-representational presence in the later period. The former mode of representation is a one-to-one correspondence of images between the eyes and external objects through perception based on the senses, which means the representation of the so-called ‘mapping’. The latter mode of presence is a one-to-many correspondence, meaning a case where the mapping as the previous one is dismantled, and also referring to cases where optically perceptual representations are broken as well as pathological forms caused by fragmentation of consciousness. In the case of the spectacle of the aurora, as shown in the later career of Jun Myung Ja, the aurora phenomenon caused by the collision of photon particles with the magnetic field of the earth’s surface can be called a dramatic yet extremely natural phenomenon.
