“이번 전시는 그동안 해온 제 모든 작업을 정리하고 작가로서의 제 삶을 완전히 새롭게 시작하는 중요한 전시입니다“ 교수로서의 오랜 이력이 있지만 독일에서 작가로서 제2의 인생을 출발하는 전환기의 시점에서 이번 전시를 오랫동안 계획하고 준비하여 온 심영철 작가의 결기에 찬 일성입니다.

Dancing Garden 전시는 심영철 작가의 미국 유학이후 1993년부터 줄곧 이어온 미디어아트와 설치미술의 실험들을 종합 정리하는 의미가 큰 전시입니다. 이번 전시를 통하여 우리는 예술과 테크놀로지, 미디어실험의 선두주자로 평가받아 온 심영철 작가의 과거, 현재, 미래를 볼 수 있습니다. 전시를 위해 심영철 작가는 치밀하면서도 복합적인 작품들을 준비했습니다. 작가는 선화랑에서 그동안 닫혀 있었던 4층 전시공간을 활용해 입체화, 구조화하는 작업까지 열정적으로 진행하였고, 이러한 작가의 열정적인 예술적 탐구와 실험의 결과물로서 이번 “Dancing Garden” 전시회가 열리게 되었습니다.

“Dancing Garden”을 구성하는 1층 “꽃비 정원”, 2층 “흙의 정원”, 3층 “물의 정원”, 4층 “하늘 정원” 등의 다채로운 곳에서 다양한 모습으로 변화하는 현대 사회에 있어서의 예술과 기술의 융합과 미디어아트와 설치미술의 미래를 공감하실 수 있을 것입니다. 많은 분들이 작가의 다채로운 정원들을 통하여 여러분들에게 해주고 싶은 이야기가 무엇인지, 보여주고 싶은 작가의 꿈과 정신이 무엇인지를 작가와 함께 소통, 공감할 수 있는 기회가 되기를 기대합니다.  

“This is an important exhibition for me to sum up the entire work I have done so far and start a new life as an artist.” This is the firm statement of Shim Young Churl, who has been planning and preparing for this exhibition for a long time, which is a showcase to be held at a turning point for her to start a second stage as an artist in Germany after a long career as a professor in Korea.

Dancing Garden is a meaningful exhibition that comprehensively summarizes Shim Young Churl’s experiments in media art and installation art, which she has continued since 1993, when she returned to Korea after completing her studies in the United States. Through this exhibition, we can survey the past, present and future of Shim Young Churl, who has been regarded as an artist at the forefront of experimentation with art, technology and media in Korea. For this exhibition, the artist has made meticulous and complex preparations. At SUN Gallery, she enthusiastically carried out the three-dimensional and structural work by utilizing the space on the fourth floor that had been closed. The “Dancing Garden” exhibition is the result of her passionate artistic exploration and experimentation.

“Dancing Garden” consists of four sections: ‘Flower-Rain Garden’ on the 1st floor, ‘Soil Garden’ on the 2nd, ‘Water Garden’ on the 3rd, and ‘Sky Garden’ on the 4th. In the exhibition, you will be able to imagine the future of media art and installation art as well as the convergence of art and technology in contemporary society that is going through a great transformation in various areas. We hope that Shim Young Churl’s colorful and kaleidoscopic gardens will be an opportunity for many people to communicate and sympathize with the messages, dreams and inspirations of the artist.
