선화랑은 2026년 6월 17일부터 7월 21일까지 류지안의 개인전 《Where Time Settles into Light》을 개최한다. 지난해 Abu Dhabi Art 참가를 계기로 선화랑과 인연을 맺은 류지안의 이번 전시는 작가가 선화랑에서 갖는 첫 개인전으로, 무수한 자개 조각을 축적해 완성한 신작을 포함해 총 20점의 작품을 선보인다.
전시 제목이기도 한 《Where Time Settles into Light》는 류지안이 자개를 매개로 지속해 온 빛과 시간, 감정의 탐구를 함축한다. 작가는 시간과 감정처럼 보이지 않는 흐름이 빛과 물질, 공간을 통해 어떤 형태와 구조를 이루는지에 주목해 왔다. 이번 전시에서는 촘촘히 축적된 자개의 표면이 정지와 움직임, 확장을 동시에 품으며, 관람자의 시선과 빛의 변화에 따라 끊임없이 다른 감각을 불러일으킨다. 빛은 시각적 요소를 넘어 보이지 않는 시간과 감정의 리드미컬한 움직임을 드러내는 언어가 되며, 출품작들은 그 언어가 축적되어 이룬 하나의 구조로 존재한다. 이 움직임은 <WAVE>, <ETERNAL FLOW> 등 작품 제목처럼 파도의 물결이나 소용돌이를 닮아 있는가 하면, 블랙홀과 별, 은하수 같은 우주적 풍경을 떠올리게도 한다. 오랜 시간 축적되어 자개가 지니게 된 천연의 색과 빛은 인류가 살아가는 자연과 우주의 시간을 함께 담아낸다.
한편, 한국 전통 나전 기법을 동시대 조형언어로 확장해 온 류지안은 국내외 유수 브랜드와의 협업을 통해 자개의 현대적 가능성을 보여 온 작가이기도 하다. 롤스로이스 모터카 (Rolls-Royce Motor Cars)가 진행한 글로벌 프로젝트 ‘Inspiring Greatness’에 참여한 최초의 한국 작가이며, 까르띠에 메종 청담 (Cartier Maison Cheongdam)에 작품이 영구 소장되어 있다. 이 외에도 반클리프 아펠, 프레드 (FRED, LVMH), 샤넬, 크리스찬 디올, 블랑팡, 파네라이 등 해외 명품 메종과의 콜라보레이션을 이어왔으며, 제네시스, 기아, 대한항공 등 국내 기업과도 다수의 커미션 작업을 진행했다. 작가의 작품은 한미 정상회담, 튀르키예 대통령 국빈방문, 영국 엘리자베스 2세 여왕 등 전 세계 45개국 이상의 정상에게 전달된 대한민국 공식 국가 선물로 채택되었으며, 국립민속박물관에도 영구 소장되어 한국 전통 공예와 동시대 미술을 잇는 작가로 자리매김하고 있다.
SunGallery is pleased to present Where Time Settles into Light, a solo exhibition by Jian Yoo (b. 1982), on view from June 17 to July 21, 2026. This exhibition presents the artist's first solo exhibition at SunGallery and follows her connection with the gallery through Abu Dhabi Art last year. Featuring twenty works, including newly created pieces composed of countless meticulously assembled fragments of mother-of-pearl, the exhibition offers a comprehensive view of her ongoing exploration of light, time, and emotion.
The exhibition title, Where Time Settles into Light, encapsulates her ongoing exploration of light, time, and emotion through the medium of mother of pearl. She has long been interested in how invisible forces such as time and emotion can take shape through light, material, and space. For her, emotion is both the most delicate imprint of existence and the most intimate record of time. Rather than representing these experiences directly, she presents them as perceptual fields that are felt and experienced through the senses. Throughout the exhibition, densely layered surfaces of mother-of-pearl embody both stillness and movement, condensation and expansion. As viewers shift their position and encounter changing light conditions, the works continuously generate new visual and sensory experiences. Light functions not merely as a visual element but as a language through which invisible rhythms of time and emotion become perceptible. Each work stands as a structure formed through the accumulation of this language.
The dynamic movement present in the exhibition evokes the imagery suggested by series titles such as WAVE and ETERNAL FLOW. At times, these forms resemble the motion of waves and swirling currents; at others, they recall cosmic phenomena such as black holes, stars, and galaxies. The natural colors and iridescent luminosity inherent in mother-of-pearl, formed over long periods of time, embody both the temporal dimensions of nature and the broader timescale of the universe. Jian Yoo is also widely recognized for expanding traditional Korean mother-of-pearl craftsmanship into a contemporary visual language. She became the first Korean artist selected for Rolls-Royce Motor Cars’ global project Inspiring Greatness, and her work is permanently housed at Cartier Maison Cheongdam. In addition, she has collaborated with numerous international luxury maisons, including Van Cleef & Arpels, FRED (LVMH), Chanel, Christian Dior, Blancpain, and Panerai, while also completing commissions for major Korean corporations such as Genesis, KIA, and Korean Air. Her works have been selected as official state gifts of the Republic of Korea and presented to more than forty-five world leaders and dignitaries, including participants in the Korea–United States summit, the state visit of the President of Türkiye, and Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom.
