정영주 작가의 <도시-사라지는 풍경> 시리즈는 우리의 삶에 관한 이야기를 담고 있다. 바쁜 현대사회를 살아가며 잊고 지냈던 우리의 소중한 시간을 그녀는 섬세하게 짚어내어 화폭에 담아내었다. 작가는 고달프고 힘들지만, 성실히 살아가는 이웃들을 떠올리며 달동네를 그린다. 유년 시절 기억에서 비롯된 달동네가 낭만으로만 머물지 않고 울림 있게 다가오는 것은 바로 이와 같은 생각이 화면에 오롯이 담겨있기 때문이다. 밀집된 판자촌 사이의 희미한 불빛은 작품에서 중요한 역할을 맡는다. 이 작은 불빛은 조용한 동네를 밝힐 뿐만 아니라 어떤 난관과 시련 속에서도 꿋꿋이 살아가는 사람들의 의연함과 희망을 암시하고 있다. 주위는 어둠 속에 휩싸여 있지만 그런 가운데서도 소망을 잃지 않고 살아가는 사람들, 이 희망이 그가 묘출하는 달동네에서 피어나고 있음을 작가는 말하고 있다. 또한 한지의 촉각적 성질은 과거의 축적된 시간의 흐름을 느끼는 매개체로써 절묘한 조화를 이루고 있다. 작가는 얽히고설킨 과거의 '개인적 기억'을 '시대의 기억'으로 승화시킨다.
Artist Joung Young Ju's work is about portraying shanty town hided by packed buildings in the city. She usually pastes korean handmade paper on the canvas and then color, which is similar to 'papier colle' technique. She really likes that technique because of the korean hand made paper's unique characteristics which absorb sunlight and reveal it warmly, For her, what She is the assemble of all fragments of her memories in the past. She wants to do the same thing in her works with papers on the canvas like making a house, town and world with hundreds of pieces of papers in her works. The House is not only a physical space but also the base of her spirit and culture as well as her private history. She wants to give disappearing shanty town and old memories a important role as a main actors in our life in her works. Artist Joung Young Ju's works are some kind of attempt to express paradise with somethings alienated or forgotten. She wishes her works give some silent stability and warmth to the audiences who have some difficulties or got tired with warm shanty town on her canvas. Moreover, she wishes her works want to be a good guidance to the audiences which make them think what are the most valuable things to the human natures.
